Among, Amongst or Between: Meanings with Examples

Among and Amongst

Among and Amongst, both are prepositions having the same meaning.

Among এবং Amongst উভয়ই preposition যাদের অর্থও একই।

Meaning as a preposition:

1. Located in the middle of a group of things or people.

একদল বস্তু বা ব্যক্তির মাঝে অবস্থিত।

Example:

• The house is situated among the hills.
• I was discussing the matter amongst my friends.

2. Taking place within or belonging to a group.

কোন দলের মাঝে ঘটা বা কোন দলের অন্তর্ভূক্ত।

Example:

• This product is really popular among the middle-class people.
• I was the first amongst them who stood up.

3. A choice or division between three or more things or people.

তিন বা ততোধিক বস্তু বা ব্যক্তির থেকে বেছে নেয়া বা তাদের মধ্যে ভাগ করে দেয়া।

Example:

• This books will be divided among the four winning students.
• The total donation will be distributed amongst the flood victims.

Between

Between, the word can be used as a preposition as well as an adverb.

Between, শব্দটি preposition এবং adverb হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।

Meaning as a preposition/adverb:

1. Denoting location at or across the space separating two objects.

দুইটি বস্তুর মাঝে বা মাঝ দিয়ে অবস্থান নির্দেশ করে।

Example:

• The river is flowing between the cities.
• The place is situated at the border between Bangladesh and India.

2. Denoting the period separating two points in time.

দুইটি সময়ের মধ্যবর্তী সময়কাল নির্দেশ করে।

Example:

• The incident took place between 1995 to 2000.

3. Denoting a range.

একটি পরিসর নির্দেশ করে।

Example:

• These clothes are for girls aged between 12 to 15 years.

4. Denoting relation or connection involving two or more parties.

দুই বা ততোধিক পক্ষের মধ্যে সম্পর্ক বা সংযোগ নির্দেশ করে।

Example:

• The bonding between the two sisters is really strong.

5. Denoting distribution or share into two or more things or people.

দুই বা ততোধিক বস্তু বা ব্যক্তির মাঝে ভাগ বা বন্টন নির্দেশ করে।

Example:

• The mangoes were distributed between the two teams.
